Tom Wilke, Trainee Cook

What excites you about your profession?
What I like most about my job is working in a team, interacting with guests, and preparing a wide variety of dishes. Plus, no day is ever the same, which makes my apprenticeship much more interesting.

What is your favorite task?
Cooking in the à la carte business is what I enjoy the most. The times when it’s busiest and everyone in the team really shines in their role.

What do you like less?
I’m not a big fan of the early shift. I’m just not a morning person.

What does a perfect day look like for you?
A perfect day for me is when everything runs smoothly at work. Everyone is on schedule, preparations meet the highest expectations, and there’s even time to try something new—whether it’s a new dish you’ve come up with or simply rediscovering an old favorite. Then a cool drink at the end of the day, and the perfect day is coming to an end.

How do you cope with shift and weekend work?
You get used to it very quickly. It has its advantages to have some weekdays and sometimes mornings off. You’re more flexible, it’s easier to make appointments, and you can have fun when most people are working. For example, the beach is always emptier on Wednesdays than on weekends ;)

What was the best guest feedback you’ve received?
I don’t really have one particular piece of guest feedback that stands out. I’m always happy when at the end of the day the effort has paid off and the guests are completely satisfied.

What do you especially like about Camp Reinsehlen?
The calmness. Both the grounds, which are located in a relaxing, beautiful natural environment, and the relaxed attitude of my colleagues.

What advice would you give someone considering your profession?
You shouldn’t take working in the hospitality industry lightly. The work can be demanding and stressful at times, and your private life will also have to adjust. You definitely need to be aware of that. Still, I have to say that many things turn out to be easier than you initially think. The job gives you a lot in return and opens up wide-ranging opportunities and freedoms that many others don’t have. Whether it’s the ability to work anywhere in the world or the experience that makes many things easier in your personal life. Ultimately, if you commit to it and maybe have a little talent, it can be the best job ever.

Thank you for the interview!
